Brief History
In the mid 1980’s a funded program was set up to find a new method for the replacement of underground cable and piping without the need for surface trenching, and it was found that with modification the same method that has been used in the oil fields for vertical directional drilling could be used for Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) which has resulted in the technology of today.
Horizontal Directional Drilling.
Unlike open-trench construction, Horizontal Directional Drilling requires only single entry and exit points
It has become one of the major systems in use for trenchless installations for underground power and communication cables, gas, sewerage and water mains.
Advantages
Surface obstructions such as highways and landscaping are not damaged and the underground infrastructure is not disturbed when installing pipe or cable.

Effective for installations beneath busy streets and footpaths in congested areas where minimal interruptions to vehicle and pedestrian traffic is essential.

Economical, fast and cost efficient.

Can be used in hard rock.
